Hey guys I got a truck! Like the title says. She's a fully loaded 1989 Ford F-250 XLT Lariat extended cab, long bed with the 7.3L diesel. Top of the line! All power options work. Radio works. Climate controls all work. Carpet is perfect. The interior is in pretty much mint condition other than a LITTLE wear on the drivers seat. Has only 173k on the clock. Paint is faded, but nothing that won't shine right up after I get done with it!!!
    She fires right up too!
Here's a pic. Going to ditch the shell, and steps.

More to come as she gets cleaned up!!!

Lariat... score, dude! One of the first years of the 7.3 TURBO too... Very Happy

Considering the early 7.3's weren't really designed with boost in mind (since they're just an overbored 6.9), they really had respectable power and torque for the era.

You should post more pics too, I'd like to see just how nice that interior is Razz

What are you going to do with the steps?

Steps were garbage, so they ended up IN the garbage Very Happy hahaha

More pics to come. I've got the shell off too. Looks way better, and taller without the steppers.

    NNNNOOOOOOOOO

I would've gladly taken those steps off your hands! Sad

That's right, the turbo didn't come around until about '92 or '93, then the Powerstroke mid-run '94.

The previous owner changed out to higher gears for "better" MPG. . . At 60mph rpms are at about 2500k with a 3500k redline.

What shops in pa/sequim can change her back to OE gearing?

So, from OE ratio of what, like 3.55 or 3.73 to like 4.10? Or to like 3.08?

I wouldn't take anything to Midway. I went there for a simple speedometer gear and got the run-around. I've had a couple friends take things there... one got a bad repair, the other buddy's truck got messed up (hard trans cooler lines cut with snips).

I've had great luck with Quality 4x4 & Truck in PA over by Les Schwab. Good people, very reasonable prices. They also used to do machine work. I've heard nothing but good things about them. You might also talk to Tranco, I'm not sure whether or not they do diff work, but they're a good shop too.

He says he put in 355 from 410.

This is my first diesel, and first time ever having to worry about rear end gears so I'm total n00b status here.

I've heard a lot of good about quality 4x4 too. Maybe I'll swing by. Was going to have Tranco service the tranny for ~$95.

Honestly, I imagine you'd be just fine with the 3.55's. The Dodge is running 3.54 and still pulls just fine. Remember, the lower (numerically higher) the gearset you pick, you'll be quicker off the line, but will lose top end. The opposite also applies - the higher (numerically lower) gearset you run, it'll be more sluggish off the line but will have lower rpms at higher road speed. 4.10:1 is quite shallow for most Diesels, unless it's going to live its life pulling a trailer. Most are happy between the 3.2/3-3.7 range. Remember that you're probably governed in the neighborhood of 2500-2700 rpm, so taller gears will most likely be better. Talk to the folks at Quality, tell them what's in it now, and what you plan using the truck for. They can tell you one way or another what a good ring & pinion ratio should be.

I'll get off my soapbox now Razz
